How To Customize The Keyboard On An IOS Device

Back in November, I purchased a 12.9-inch iPad Pro and a Smart Keyboard to go with it. I was so used to my Belkin keyboard paired with my iPad Air 2 that I quickly became frustrated with the Smart Keyboard's lack of a shortcut row. Another option in the keyboard settings. The hidden touchpad is iOS's answer to its lack of an actual mouse or touchpad, which has held back Apple's operating system. The key here, by the way, is to do a long-slide gesture — sliding and holding your finger down, in other words, as you can see in the image above.

And you wonder why Apple is replacing entire top case assemblies—including batteries—when they only really need to replace the keyboard. Sure, you can press Command-Shift-4 to select an area to capture to the Desktop (Command-Shift-3 saves the whole screen as a file on the Desktop), but if you add the spacebar you'll access more options.

IOS 11 features a number of new and updated gestures to help you make the most of the extra screen real-estate on the device. If you want the one-thumb keyboard permanently, go to Settings > General > Keyboards > One Handed Keyboard and mark the one you want.

If you repeatedly type the same sentences over and over on IOS your iPhone, you'll want to look at keyboard shortcuts. The iPad keyboard is automatically displayed whenever you need to type something, and the default location is at the lower portion of the screen.

Whenever text is on the screen and the keyboard is open, press firmly anywhere on the keyboard. Here you can press on the wand to auto enhance your photo or press on the icon that looks like a volume knob with dots around it. The latter will bring up three new sub menus: Light, Color, B&W with various granular settings within them.

There's a new Thesaurus option in iOS 12, but you'll need to enable it. To do so, go to Settings > General > Dictionary. Apple's stock keyboard automatically switches to a dark mode, but in my experience, it doesn't work that well and won't change in all apps you're using it. If you want a true dark mode keyboard, you can easily swap themes in Gboard.
